James Crookall

Vancouver Photographic Society


James Crookall was born in Preston, Lancashire, England. He came to BC as a child, and was employed by the Union Steamship Company in various positions. He served in the Royal Flying Corps for two years during World War One. He returned to work for Union Steamships after the war.

He exhibited work in the 1939 Vancouver Photographic Society first annual exhibition, and in the 1940 1st Annual Vancouver International Salon of Pictorial Photography exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery. The artist was living in Vancouver.

Crookall retired from Union Steamship in 1958. He was also a painter and an avid bicyclist. The City of Vancouver Archives has approximately 4,000 of his photographs on file.
