Alberta Society of Artists

1931 - current

The Alberta Society of Artists (ASA) was founded in 1931. Many artists painted in both Alberta and British Columbia, usually moving from east to west in their career, and thus exhibited in both Alberta and B.C. at some time.

ASA members who also painted and exhibited in B.C. include:

George Angliss
Kay Angliss
Maxwell Bates
Annora Brown
Harry Ernest Jones
Roland Gissing
Alfred Crocker Leighton
J.W.G. Macdonald
Violet Owen
Frank Palmer
Walter Joseph Phillips
Clifford Robinson
Dorothy Henzell Willis
Illingworth Kerr

The Society published a journal for many years called HIGHLIGHTS. This contained articles, stories, doings of the society, lists of members, and other items of interest to the members. The journal also included many original artist prints, which were donated by the artists for inclusion in one of the issues. The artists were requested to provide enough copies of the print to have one put into each copy of the issue. Over the years a number of important artists donated their work, in some cases more than once. Some examples are shown below:
