DARK MERLIN

Original Relief Print issued September 2023

Image size 12" high by 9" wide (300 mm by 230 mm)
(Low resolution image illustrated)

This is a life-size linocut of a Merlin, also known as a Pigeon Hawk. I saw it one morning when I was walking around Lost Lagoon in Stanley Park. I ran into a small group of birdwatchers, who were observing a collection of small songbirds in a tree. I walked along a little further, and saw this little beauty perched on top of a dead snag. It was looking for a little songbird of its own for breakfast. I managed to get a few photographs of it before it took off after its prey. It was silhouetted against the sky, so it appeared quite dark. Its beak and feet are yellow (this impression will be hand tinted when dry) but the long claws are completely black and have a huge reach for the actual size of the bird.

Dragonflies are actually part of the Merlin's diet, so I added this one from my imagination. It was printing a little too darkly for my liking, so I laid a small piece of Japanese lace paper over it after inking the block but before the paper was laid down on it. This is my biggest linocut to date, and it requires being pressed three times for each impression: once in the middle and once on each end, running it through the press lengthways to fit the 11" x 14" paper.

The edition of 20 impressions is printed on Arches Text Wove paper 120 gsm made in France, from a design cut into artist-grade linoleum made in the Netherlands, using Japanese gouges. All impressions are hand printed by the artist with Caligo Safe Wash Furnace Carbon Black relief printing ink made in Wales, using an antique J. Smart copy press made in Canada. All prints are titled, editioned, signed and dated by the artist in pencil, and monogrammed in the plate.
