BLACKBERRY HARBOUR
Original Relief Print issued April 2024
Image size 7" high by 9" wide (175 mm by 225 mm)
This is an image from a photograph that I took on a mini-vacation up the coast to
Egmont, on the Sechelt Peninsula. Egmont has a nice little harbour full of a variety
of vessels. As well, there were a number of old fishing boats hauled out of the water
and put up on blocks in empty lots throughout the village. They looked very scenic,
and it seemed like the undergrowth was taking over quite rapidly in some cases.
This boat was still being worked on, but it was a race between the re-caulking
being done and the blackberries taking over. I tried to make it look like the boat
is ploughing its way through the undergrowth. A frieze of fish lines the bottom of
the image, in respect for all of the fish hauled out of the water by this boat.
The edition of 30 impressions is printed on Arches Text Wove paper 120 gsm made in France,
from a design cut into artist-grade linoleum made in the Netherlands, using Japanese gouges.
All impressions are hand printed by the artist with Caligo Safe Wash Furnace Carbon Black
relief printing ink made in Wales, using an antique J. Smart copy press made in Canada.
All impressions are titled, editioned, signed and dated by the artist in pencil. All are
monogrammed in the plate.
