BRITISH COLUMBIA ARTISTS

Society of Fine Arts

Body Formed With Headquarters in Vancouver

Victoria Times, April 2 1909

The B.C. Society of Fine Arts, which has recently been incorporated, has been formed with the object of stimulating the public interest in the cause of art in this province, developing a taste for artistic productions, gathering artists resident in British Columbia, including painters, sculptors, architects, artistic engravers and draughtsmen designers into one society and affording them a central location where their works may be submitted to public view.
To this end the society proposes to hold periodical exhibitions of works of art, the first of which will be held in the Dominion hall, Pender street, Vancouver, opening on April 20th.
The B.C. Society of Fine Arts will be conducted on the lines of similar societies in Eastern Canada. The distance of Montreal and Toronto prevents our artists from taking any active part in the proceedings of these societies, and it is felt that a time has arrived when an independent beginning may be made.
The officers are as follows: Honorary president, His Excellency Earl Grey, G.C.M.G., G.C.V.O.; patrons, Sir Charles Hibbert Tupper, K.C.M.G., K.C.; Hon. Richard McBride, Mrs. J.C. Keith, Mr. H. Abbott, Mrs. A.L. Russell, the Mayor of Vancouver, and Mr. F.W. Wade, K.C.; vice-presidents Thos. W. Fripp and B. McEvoy; hon. treasurer John Kyle, R.C.A. (sic); hon. secretary S.P. Judge.
