EXHIBITION by MAXWELL BATES

Vancouver Art Gallery April 29th to May 18th, 1947

       "Maxwell Bates exhibited at a representative show of Canadian Painting at the National Gallery at Ottawa and at the Art Centre, New York, before going to England in 1937.
       In 1932 he was one of three painters who held a joint exhibition at the Bloomsbury Gallery in London. The Wertheim Gallery in Manchester gave him a one-man show in 1934. From 1931-39 he was represented in the mixed shows at the Wertheim Gallery, London, and during this period his pictures were shown at other London Galleries, among them the Storran and Redfern and at the Royal Academy, Artists' International, etc.
       In 1938 he held a large one-man show at the Wertheim Gallery, London. Over sixty paintings by the artist have been acquired for the Wertheim Collection.
       Pictures by Maxwell Bates have been included in exhibitions touring the public galleries of England, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand."
