Exhibition by Mary Riter Hamilton

August 9th to 17th, 1938

Born at Teeswater, Ontario, Mary Riter Hamilton first studied painting at Toronto under G.A. Reid and Sir Wyly Grier. On the advice of the latter she decided to continue her art education in Europe, where her instructors included many notable figures in the world of art. Three paintings, in oil and watercolour, were first accepted by the Paris Salon in 1903. During her residence in Paris, Mrs. Hamilton's work attracted favourable notice from leading art critics of the day. "Maternity", possibly her best known picture, was painted during this period and shown at the Women's International Exhibition at Paris. Returning to Canada in 1911, Mrs. Hamilton staged a showing of her work in the city of Toronto and in the following season she exhibited in the Montreal Art Gallery. Shortly before the Great War Mrs. Hamilton took a studio in Victoria, where she painted, exhibited and gave instruction in art. A series of portraits of former Lieutenant-Governors of British Columbia was one of her commissions. This task was, however, interrupted by the outbreak of war. Pictures donated by Mrs. Hamilton to the Belgian Red Cross were the means of raising considerable sums of money for that organization. After the war, Mrs. Hamilton returned to France and executed a series of paintings of battlefield scenes. Some 227 of these were accepted by the Public Archives at Ottawa, where they were first exhibited in 1927. In recognition of her services to art during and after the war, Mrs. Hamilton was decorated by the French Government with the Order of "Palmes Academiques". For some years she engaged in the teaching of art in Winnipeg, removing to Vancouver in 1929. Many young art students of this city have received the benefit of her instruction. Mrs. Hamilton's studio is located at 1504 West Fourteenth Avenue.
