Students Hold Art Exhibition

Vancouver Sun - April 3 1940

A group of hard-working artists whose ages cover a wide range but who unite in the common pursuit of art, are holding their first exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery. They are the members of the Atelier Sketch Club, formed under a year ago.
The club was formed of students attending the Vancouver School of Art night school and it meets Friday nights in its studio in the Holden Building.
"We chip in for models," explains Mrs. Betty Duncalfe, "unofficial secretary." She only joined a month and a half ago and is a model as well as an artist and sculptor.
One of the most striking paintings on the wall is by Marjorie Harferd, who is also an artist's model. Her fine watercolor entitled "Tall Timber" holds a place of importance near a striking portrait study by S. Yamada, entitled "Mr. Singh."
Harry Hunt, whose sense of the ridiculous has crept into his portrayal of a respectable citizen, is the head of the Atelier Sketch Club, which has 16 regular members "and an unnumbered group who come when they can."
