ABOUT THE EXHIBITION INDEX

The exhibition index is not (yet) a complete listing of all art exhibitions held in Vancouver from 1890 to 1950. Most exhibitions of the B.C. Society of Fine Arts are listed up to 1950, as are a sampling of exhibitions by numerous groups such as the Vancouver Exhibition, the Studio Club, the Palette & Chisel Club, and PASOVAS. Exhibitions listed typically exclude shows in private galleries.

Exact dates and locations are listed where known. This is particularly difficult for exhibitions held before the Vancouver Art Gallery (VAG) opened in 1931. The artist(s) / exhibition list is linked to pages as they are created. The artist may be a group or a solo exhibition, linked to either the group's history or the artist's biography. If the name of the exhibition is linked then the catalogue is transcribed.

A representative sampling of exhibitions at the VAG following its opening in 1931 and up until 1950 is listed, particularly the B.C. Artists Annual exhibitions. Of the almost 1,000 separate exhibitions held at the VAG in that period only about 300 would qualify as exhibitions of B.C. artists and artwork. The others were shows such as Drawings of English Watercolour Painters; Contemporary U.S. Artists, and so on.

A list of abbreviations linked from the home page gives the full names for BCA (B.C. Artists annual exhibition); BCSFA (B.C. Society of Fine Arts annual exhibition, and so on.
