ABOUT THE ARTIST INDEX

There are approximately 1,800 artists listed in the index. The list was compiled from all relevant artists listed in available exhibition catalogues starting from 1890. Since there were numerous European and American artists listed and I wished to create a list of Vancouver and B.C. artists alone, if possible, I decided that relevant artists would include:
those born in B.C. - such as Molly Lamb or E.J. Hughes
those who moved to B.C. and stayed - W.P. Weston, Jack Shadbolt
         those who painted B.C. in passing - Lucius R. O'Brien, F.H. Varley

The exhibitions listed typically exclude shows in private galleries, since the editor has yet to find a single exhibition catalogue for those shows.

Artists without their own biographical file may have information listed after their name in the artist index, for example:
         Aldred, Marjorie K. (also Margery)(BCA 40/45/46/47 Oyama/Vernon)
Blomfield, Reginald C. (Hon. Mrs.) (BCSFA May 24 IACS23)

Refer to the list of abbreviations linked from the home page. The listing for Aldred gives one alternate spelling of her name, notes work in four BCA exhibitions from 1940 to 1947, living first in Oyama and then in Vernon. Mrs. Blomfield showed work with the BCSFA in 1924 and the Island Arts & Crafts Society of Victoria in 1923. VAGx1234 or other number indicates a solo exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery, a sequential number kept for every show held at the gallery.

If a listed artist has no information given, nor a web page of their own, it means that they exhibited with the B.C. Society of Fine Arts at least once sometime between 1909 and 1950. The names in that case were from my preliminary list of all artists in the BCSFA catalogues that I had available. Artists with more than one name - Schellenberger/Rand, Lamb/Bobak - are listed under each name, linked to one web page biography. Alternate spellings (Isabel, Isabelle) are typically given on the artist's web page.
