USING THE CD-ROM

We suggest that you copy the entire contents of the CD-ROM to a directory on your hard drive, perhaps named AAEV for simplicity. The files on the CD are very compact. Once the files are copied to your computer, make a shortcut to the file AAEVHOME.htm and put the shortcut on your desktop, giving it an easy name to remember, perhaps AAEV or Vancouver Art & Artists.

Access to the information is now just a double-click away, and the CD-R need not be in the CD drive. The hard drive also gives much faster access time, so browsing the files is almost instantaneous. You will have also created a backup copy, in case the CD-R is lost, stolen, or damaged.

Please note that the only difficulties encountered by users of the CD-R are clients who have Mac computers. Depending on the Mac operating system, files may not hyperlink to each other when you are viewing them on the CD-R. In this case you must copy the files to your hard drive, where the links will work.

The project is sorted into five major groups of information:
Artists - alphabetical index of artists and biographies
Exhibitions - chronological index and transcribed catalogues
Groups - alphabetical index and articles
Clippings - chronological transcriptions of reviews & letters
References - chronological lists of books, pamphlets, catalogues

All files have links to these groups as a header. The home page has links to additional information, what's new, lists of members of groups, abbreviations, and occasional papers.

The contents of the directory can also be viewed with a file manager program, and the files sorted by size, date, or name and then opened with an internet browser. We suggest that you browse through the files by always going forward to the next link, and trying to avoid navigating back to previous pages and then forward again.

The files are all plain HTML coding, and will run on any web browser or operating system. No plug-ins are required, no frames are used. All pages will fit to screen when viewed, and fit to page when printed. No fonts are declared, thus your computer will control the display and print fonts.
