Ernest Le Messurier
1894 - 1932
Portrait from the Gold Stripe
Ernest Le Messurier was born in Hamilton, Ontario. His family later moved
to Vancouver. An article about him in The Gold Stripe Number One noted
that he was "art editor of school magazines and at the University of
British Columbia. He graduated B.A., and was one of the eight who
received the degree in khaki." The article was accompanied by one of his pen and ink cartoons,
which has a very distinctive signature.
Messurier enlisted with the 11th Irish, and drew their Honour Roll of the officers.
He went overseas, where he was the Editor of the "Chevrons and Stars," the official
organ of the Canadian Training School for Officers at Bexhill, England. He was
appointed to the rank of Lieutenant.
School Days cartoon, 1926
He apparently returned safely to Vancouver, since the January 1926 issue of
School Days magazine had one of his pen and ink
drawings in it, accompanying a story titled "Mr. Lion Meets Mr. Man."
Le Messurier died in Montreal in 1932.
The City of Vancouver Archives has a collection of his cartoons on file, listed
as "Series S02 - Ernest Le Messurier cartoons" reference code AM1562-S02.
