Mrs. Joan Goodall

dates

B.C. Society of Fine Arts (Member 1921/24)

Mrs. Joan Goodall exhibited in the September 1921 and May 1924 Annual Exhibition of the B.C. Society of Fine Arts, held at the Vancouver School Board offices on Hamilton Street.

The exhibition catalogue for the shows gave her name alternately as Joan Goodall, Mrs. Goodall, and Mrs. Joan Goodall.

It is possible that this artist is "also" Janet Eaves, or Mrs. Janet Goodall. If so, it is unusual that the artist would switch names back and forth over a five year period in alternating exhibitions. Researcher Grant Hurley stated in an October 2021 email that Janet Eaves also used the name Joan occasionally, so it is possible the exhibiting artists are one and the same, although it seems to make no sense that she would do that.

"In 14 and 15 Mrs. Joan Goodall gives us two decorative panels whose presentment of peacocks and angels in silver and blue, while reminiscent of the Victorians, still manages to strike a new note in decoration. ... Mrs. Joan Goodall, with an exhibition of hand-woven art fabric has emphasized the beauty and utility of reviving what have been called the peasant arts. ... "

"Two exhibits of artistic craft were shown, viz., some very interesting specimens of weaving done by Mrs. Joan Goodall, B.C.A., on her own loom. These drapes were designed by herself. The same artist also showed two decorative paintings of quaint and original beauty."
