Ruth Carlson exhibited work in the 1944 British Columbia At Work exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery.

Her painting Prospectors won the third prize of $100.00, and was illustrated in WALLNEWS in March 1945, which also noted about the artist: "art student; worked in canneries; saved enough to return to art studies; member Fruit and Vegetable Packers' Union (CCL)." The painting depicted two men using gold pans in a stream, a log cabin in the background.

She graduated from the Vancouver School of Art in 1946.
