BOARD OF SCHOOL TRUSTEES

DRAWING

Vancouver, B.C.
         December 22, 1925.

J.S. Gordon, Esq.,
         Municipal Inspector of Schools,

Dear Sir:

I beg to submit my report on Drawing in the Vancouver City Schools for the year 1925:

A general survey of what has been accomplished during the year leads to the conclusion that an advance has been made towards higher standards of drawing and planning of lessons by both teachers and pupils.

The work sent in for selection for the Exhibitions at Hastings Park and New Westminster showed a better appreciation of colour, drawing and design, and received favourable comment from both officials and visitors.

At the request of the Board of Education, Melbourne, Australia, a selected exhibit of sixteen sheets of drawings was forwarded to the International Exhibition of school drawings held in Melbourne in October and November 1925.

The establishment of the Arts and Crafts School by the Board in October this year, has given an opportunity to our former public and high school pupils to specialize in Art Subjects. The enrolment has been very encouraging to all desiring the success of the school.

A class for teachers, who feel the need for greater proficiency and a better understanding of the aims of the public school course in Drawing, was started in October in connection with the Art School. Thirty-five teachers have enrolled in this class and others have joined the regular evening classes of the school.

The steady increase of pupils and teachers in our schools make supervising visits to each school further apart and less frequent for checking up the work and giving continuous, constructive and helpful criticism. The need for assistance in supervising the drawing has been recognized for some time; so far, however, no help has been given. May I bring this matter to the notice of yourself and the Board.

In conclusion I wish to thank you, the principals and staff of the schools for the courtesy and co-operation extended to me during the year's work.

         Respectfully submitted,
                  S.P. Judge,
                           Supervisor of Drawing.
