BRITISH COLUMBIA ARTISTS

Exhibition by Erich Loewe

Vancouver Art Gallery
Feb. 8 - 27 1949

ERICH LOEWE, coming out of political turmoil in Germany, a decade ago, from his native town of Munich to Vancouver, has resided here ever since and become a Canadian Citizen.

HIS WORK shows undoubtedly traces of his early training under the noted painter Schrader-Velgen in Munich, where he also was awarded the degree of Doctor of Philisophy at the University. Later Dr. Loewe studied history of art under Heinrich Woelfflin in Munich and under Venturi and Benedotto Croce in Rome. He travelled and worked with noted archeologists in excavations around ancient Nineveh, Bagdad, Babylon and Ecbatana in Persia. The artist also studied in Andre Lhote's Academy in Paris.

MOST OF the works shown were painted during the last two or three years; some of them at an earlier time. A fully retrospective exhibition is not possible, as unfortunately most of Dr. Loewe's earlier pictures were lost before and during the war and destroyed in bombardments.

THE ARTIST is represented in numerous private collections in Austria, England, the United States and Canada, especially in Vancouver. Distinguished sitters for portraits include the poet Waldemar Bonsels, the Metropolitan opera star Fritz Feinhals, the Princess of Hessen, and the composer Alban Berg.
