Jack Avison was an early student at the Vancouver School of Art, passing second year courses in June 1933.

It appears that Avison was one of a number of art school students who followed Frederick Varley and Jock Macdonald to the newly formed but short-lived BC College of Arts in Vancouver, attending the stage-craft and theatre-arts classes in 1933-34. The classes produced a modern adaption to Ben Jonson's comedy play Volpone at the College in January 1934, the play was well received by the press.

"Jack Avison was a realistic, foxy Volpone, making apt use of his hands as well as his voice in interpreting the part."
