Josiah Howard Smith illustration

This is a drawing by J.H. Smith for the book CHINOOK DAYS (1926). Captain McLean was a well-known charactor on the West coast in the late 1800s and early 1900s. He was said to be a bit of a pirate, and fought sea battles while poaching in foreign waters, according to his biography in CHINOOK DAYS. McLean was the man used as the prototype for the Captain in "THE SEA WOLF" by Jack London.
