Frank Armington was born in Fordwich, Ontario in 1876. He studied art in Toronto from 1892 to 1899 under J.W.L. Forster. In 1900 he studied at the Academie Julien in Paris. He married Caroline Wilkinson in Paris in 1900, where they later moved to in 1905.

The Armingtons were commissioned to travel across Canada by the Canadian Pacific Railway and produce images for the railway's use. Some of these images were exhibited in September 1911, in Vancouver. The Art Gallery of Peel list of selected exhibitions incorrectly states that this exhibition was at the Vancouver Art Gallery, which was actually founded twenty years later in 1931. The location of the exhibition has yet to be determined by this author.

Frank produced approximately 200 etchings and engravings, as well as many oil paintings, before he died of a heart attack in 1941 in the same New York apartment where Caroline died. The Armington papers and photographs were then destroyed, making their history less accessible than it should be.
