Caroline Armington was born in Brampton, Ontario in 1875. She began studying art c1890 in Toronto. She trained as a nurse, but by 1901 she was teaching art.

She married Frank Armington in Paris in 1900, where they later moved to in 1905.

The Armingtons were commissioned to travel across Canada by the Canadian Pacific Railway and produce images for the railway's use. Some of these images were exhibited in September 1911, in Vancouver. The Art Gallery of Peel list of selected exhibitions incorrectly states that this exhibition was at the Vancouver Art Gallery, which was actually founded twenty years later in 1931. The location of the exhibition has yet to be determined by this author.

She exhibited work in the 1932 All Canadian Exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery. She had a solo exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery in 1936. She died of a heart attack in New York in 1939.

By the time she passed away, she had completed an estimated 557 etchings and drypoints. Her work is in major collections around the world.

Frank Armington survived Caroline by two years before dying of a heart attack in the same New York apartment where Caroline died. The Armington papers and photographs were then destroyed, making their history less accessible than it should be.
