Mia Johnson watercolour "MJ"

This watercolour titled "MJ" by Mia Johnson (q.v.) was exhibited and sold at a solo exhibition at the Bau-Xi Gallery in 1985. Private collection. The image is a fallen birch tree, rotting on the ground, on which someone carved the initials "MJ" on its trunk. The location of the painting was called "bluebell woods" by the artist, it was a strip of second-growth forest bordering the north side of 33rd Avenue from West Boulevard up the hill to the west. It was a lingering remnant of the former Quilchena Golf Course, the trees were retained along 33rd partly to minimize the number of errant golf balls flying off the course. The abandoned woods and fairways of the golf course were a great adventure playground. This particular location was infilled with houses along 33rd, and a "new" section of 32nd Ave. was built to the north, it was also filled with houses. A small park remains between 32nd and Prince of Wales high school
