Charles Marega with lion

This photograph is dated July 25, 1938. Sculptor Charles Marega is close to finishing this stylized sculpture of a lion. It is one of the two lions intended for installation at the south end of the Lions Gate Bridge, Vancouver, which was then under construction. The lion's head and body were cast separately in molds, then assembled. The front legs are being built on a wood framework covered with chicken wire, which will then be finished with a covering of either concrete or mortar.
