Gerhardt Class sculpture

This sundial sculpture was installed in 1967. It was commissioned in honour of the "Three Greenhorns" who were early west end settlers. The sculpture was funded by Cunningham Drugstores, whose first drugstore opened at the corner of Denman and Nelson Street in 1911. There are inscriptions on four stones at the base of the plinth, and on top of the stone beyond. Photographs Gary Sim, January 16 2022.

"This sundial commemorates three English greenhorns' - Samuel Brighouse, John Morton and William Hailstone - who in 1862 filed the first claim and planned the first home and industry in the then heavily wooded area now bounded by Burrard Inlet, Stanley Park, English Bay, and Burrard Street, to which they received title in 1867."

"I mark my hours by shadow, mayest thou mark thine by sunshine."

"Presented by Cunningham Drug Stores Ltd. whose first store was opened at Denman and Nelson Streets in 1911."

"Erected under the auspices of the Centennial Committee of Vancouver in cooperation with the Park Board."
