This photograph of a proposed memorial for Pauline Johnson was published in Museum Notes,
Volume 2, Number 4, December 1927. A short article accompanied the photograph, which noted
that it was "Submitted to the original committee by Mr. Charles Sergison Marega, it consisted
of two units, which could be completed at one time, and represents Pauline Johnson in
thoughtful mood contemplating a group of Indians." The Vancouver City Archives has a copy of
this photograph, with a handwritten note by Major J.S. Matthews along the bottom stating that
the design was not chosen because it was too expensive. It had been budgeted at $30,000.00 (approx. $400K in today's money) before World War One brought the project's fundraising to a halt. It did not go forward into construction after the war ended. |
