This photograph by the Editor shows a side view of one of the
original base connections for the glass spheres, which were
actually laboratory flasks made in England. The engineered
connection held the flask upside down inside the framework
of the sculpture, sealed so that it wouldn't leak, but also with
a pipe connection in the middle that allowed the fluid in the
flask to be "topped up" if the level dropped for some reason,
or perhaps also to enable the flasks to be filled in the first place. Shortly after the signs advertising the new development on the site were put up, the developers smashed the sculpture flat, leaving broken glass and pieces like this lying on the ground. They took the bronze for scrap, of course. This small piece of the sculpture was salvaged by the author before everything was dug up and hauled away. |
