This early book with a suede leather cover
was one of the more unusual items in my collection. Jacques Semeyn
was an early BC artist about whom very little seems to be known. Janet
Bingham comments in her book "Samuel Maclure Architect" on page
95 of the paperback, that a hallway in Hatley Castle was "painted
by a young Dutch artist, Jacobus Semeyn (q.v.), from Amsterdam, who was
trying to establish himself in the art world of Victoria, and the
commission was probably arranged for him by Maclure as a characteristic
means of encouragement."
