Harding Memorial
Charles Marega

This is the Harding Memorial in Stanley Park, Vancouver, commissioned to commemorate the visit of United States President Harding to this city. Each of the two eagles is about five feet high. Both of the eagles had their beaks cut off some years ago, presumably by an anti-American activist. They were recovered and welded back on. All photographs by Gary Sim, various dates, except postcards and Stuart Thomson photo unveiling of the memorial.

Location of artist signature on the base of west eagle

On June 30 2025 I wandered over to look at the rose garden, and continued up for a visit to the Harding Memorial. I decided to see if Marega had signed any of the sculptural work, and found two places where he had signed - one on the bottom edge of the bas relief of Harding, and one on the base of the west eagle. I searched in vain for a signature on either of the two female statues, and on the east eagle, but that doesn't mean that they are not signed.
