Maxwell Bates was born in Calgary in 1906, and died in Victoria, B.C. in 1980. His father was an architect, and Bates eventually qualified as an architect himself. He joined the British Army during World War II and was taken prisoner at Dunkirk, spending the entire war as a prisoner. He settled in Calgary after the war, becoming very active in the arts scene not only as an artist but as a collector, and contributor to Canadian Art and other publications.

He was largely a self-taught painter, although he studied in New York in 1949-50. He had a solo exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery in 1947.

In 1964 he had work in the RCA's 84th Annual exhibition, held at the National Gallery of Canada and the London, Ontario Art Museum.

He had paintings in nine exhibitions with the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts between 1959 and 1971.
