Thomas Bamford

February 4 1861 - February 28 1941

Vancouver Art Association (Member 1890)
Island Arts & Crafts Society (President)

Thomas Bamford was one of the earliest artists to exhibit in Vancouver. He was born in Liverpool, England, and studied at the Liverpool School of Art. He later apprenticed to an iron founder, and worked as a founder in Boston after coming to North America in 1879. While living there he studied at the Boston Art School. He came to B.C. in 1882 and worked as a founder in Victoria, and later worked as a surveyor from the 1890s until he retired in 1926. He was considered an authority on B.C. Timber (Harper).

He exhibited a number of paintings in the First Annual Exhibition of the Vancouver Art Association in 1890. He was still exhibiting his paintings forty years later at the 1930 Spring Exhibition of the B.C. Society of Fine Arts.

He exhibited his paintings with the Island Arts & Crafts Society from 1910 until 1938.

In 1932 Bamford was a signatory to an agreement to boycott the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa for their exhibition and purchase policies related to Canadian artists. He was noted as being a Victoria artist.

He also showed his work at the Vancouver Art Gallery, the Ottawa Art Gallery, the Ontario Art Gallery, at the Canadian Nation Exhibition (1903), and with the Ontario Society of Artists.

Bamford died in Victoria in 1941 at the age of 80.
